Valora pioneers with Nutri-score and Eco-score for Own-Brand products

Muttenz – Starting in June, Valora will set a new standard for transparency in Switzerland by becoming the first retailer to label its own-brand products with both Nutri-Score and Eco-Score (from Beelong). This initiative will be rolled out across its popular ok.– and READY TO GO brands, which are available in over 1,100 avec, k kiosk, and Press & Books outlets nationwide.

By introducing these labels, Valora aims to empower customers with clear, accessible information on both health and environmental impact, enabling them to make more informed purchasing decisions.

“With the simultaneous introduction of Nutri-Score and Eco-Score, we’re enhancing transparency and providing better guidance for our customers. Especially for our own brands, ok.– and READY TO GO, we want to make it easier for customers to compare products and make quicker, more informed choices.

The unique combination of these two sustainability scores in Switzerland means our customers can not only make healthier choices but also contribute to environmental sustainability,” says Roger Vogt, CEO Retail at Valora.

Nutri-Score is a well-established nutritional label used across various European countries, while the Eco-Score® label, which has seen less widespread use, aims to transparently convey the environmental impact of food products.

“Research shows that over 60% of customers want climate-related labeling on food packaging,” says Maja Rüegg, Co-Head of Sustainability Management at Valora. “These labels not only assist our customers in making better choices but also motivate us to innovate and develop more sustainable and healthier products under our own brands.”

Oriah Naef from Beelong explains: “Our Eco-Score is based on detailed lifecycle assessments, considering criteria such as CO2 emissions, land use, water consumption, and other environmental factors. We also use a bonus-penalty system to account for additional considerations like biodiversity and animal welfare.”

This initiative underscores Valora’s commitment to leading the way in sustainability and customer transparency, setting a new benchmark for the Swiss retail market.
